Professor Emeritus Tan Sri Anuwar Ali graduated with a BSc (Economics) degree from Queen’s University Belfast, Northern Ireland, in 1970. During his early years as a Tutor and Lecturer at UKM, he furthered his studies and obtained his Master’s and PhD respectively from the University of Leicester and University of Kent, Canterbury, United Kingdom.

Professor Emeritus Tan Sri Anuwar Ali has been appointed as a Member of Board of Governors of Meritus University since 2017. Previously, he was the President/Vice Chancellor of Open University Malaysia (OUM) for 12 years from 2004 to 2015. OUM, the first open and distance learning institution in the country, was established in 2000 as a private university. Prior to his appointment at OUM, he was the Vice Chancellor of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) for a period of five (5) years (1998-2003).

Within a span of more than forty (40) years since 1973, when he joined UKM as a Tutor, he has established himself not only as an Economist (in the areas of industrial planning and human resource development) but also as an Academic Leader. He was the first academician being posted to the Ministry of Education as its Director of Higher Education (1996-1998). Before that, he was the Dean of the Faculty of Economics, UKM and thereafter as Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs). Before joining UKM, he was an Assistant Director at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (1970-1973).

Currently, he is also a Member of the Board of Trustees of the Malaysian Institute of Economic Research (MIER); Member of the National Wage Consultation Council as well as the Chairman of the Technical Committee of the said council; was a member of the National Higher Education Council; and Member of International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) Academy of Graduate & Professional Studies Business Advisory Committee.

His previous experiences include being the Chairman of the Southeast Asian Open Learning Centre (SEAMOLEC) based in Jakarta; Member of the Griffith University Asia Pacific Council (GAPC), Australia; Board Member of the Association of Southeast Asian Institute of Higher Education Learning (ASAIHL); Chairman of the Malaysian Examinations Council; Board Member of Bank Pembangunan Malaysia (Malaysia Development Bank); Member of the Securities Commission Malaysia; Board Member of INTI University College and the International Medical University (IMU); Board Member of SIRIM Training Services Sdn Bhd; Board Member of the Capital Market Development Fund (CMDF); Visiting Fellow, Institute of Strategic and International Studies, Malaysia (ISIS); Executive Committee Member of the Asian Association of Open Universities (AAOU); and the Chairman of Board of Directors of the Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM).

He was appointed as Economic Consultant to a number of national and international projects such as UNIDO Consultant to the Industrial Master Plan, Malaysia (1986-1995); UNIDO Consultant to the Industrial Development of Bhutan, 1990-1991; Consultant to the Action Plan for Technology Development, Malaysia and the Action Plan for Small and Medium Scale Industries, Malaysia and involved in the preparation of the Strategic Plan for Lifelong Learning, Malaysia.
